SYNOPSIS

In life we are presented with various choices, but sometimes those we make can have a devastating effect on not only our own lives but also the lives of others.

Scene One
It’s New Year’s Day 2008, about 4.30pm.  Jack enters and is holding what looks like an old shoe box.  The radio is on and the DJ is talking about the amount of people killed on British roads in 2007.  Jack begins to take some items out of the box and lay them out on the table.  As he is doing so he begins to tell us about his son Simon.  At the same time Nick is sitting at home reading a newspaper and is obviously affected by something that he is reading.  He begins to recall the time when he first met Simon and how that year they were going to go down to Newquay and stay with a friend John for New Year’s.

Scene Two
David, a retired paramedic is relaxing at home doing the crossword.  The radio is playing something with a strong techno type beat and when he goes to switch stations to find something more soothing he hears the DJ speak about some emails he has received about the amount of accidents on the road. He recalls the first incident he ever went to and how that affected him. He reveals what it is like when as a paramedic, you get the initial call to go to an accident and also the thoughts that go through your head when you are on route to the accident.  At the same time Nick begins to recall the time they spent at John’s house and what lead to the decision that John would drive.

Scene Three
A Weather Warning for New Year’s Eve 2005 is heard and both Nick and Jack begin to recall the events of that night and the following morning.  As Nick recalls the car journey and how one minute they were all having a laugh and then suddenly the car lost control he is reminded of the actual crash as it happened and in particular the events at the scene of the accident immediately after the crash.  Jack on the other hand starts to tell us what a great evening he was having until some of the guests at his New Year’s Eve party noticed that two police officers were walking up his path. Immediately anticipating bad news, Jack’s greatest fear becomes a reality when they tell him his son Simon has been killed in a road traffic collision earlier that evening. He tells how he is then faced with making that difficult decision to phone family members in the middle of the night or wait until morning to tell them they had a lost a valued member of the family before making the hour and a half drive to the morgue to identify his son’s body.  Unable to make sense of what has happened, how one minute they were all having fun and how the next minute his best friend was dead and the other two were lying and saying that they couldn’t remember what had happened Nick goes over the Jack’s house at lunchtime the following day to tell him the truth about what happened.

Scene Four
The action now returns to David who has decided to phone the radio station to voice his concerns about people not stopping to think about the effects that their speeding actually can have on people.  At the same time we Jack tells us the effect it has had on his family in particular Simon’s younger sisters.

Scene Five
The final scene shows Jack and Nick meeting for a drink on the evening of New Year’s Eve 2008.  They both talk about Simon’s funeral and moving on.  David then tells us how difficult it was that he never found a satisfactory way of dealing with family members involved in an accident knowing that one of them is dead.  Finally Nick tells us that going over to Jack’s house that morning was the hardest thing he had ever done, telling Jack how Simon died.
